Georgetown College Celebrates Founders' Day 2026
Submitted on February 11, 2026
On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, President Rosemary Allen welcomed students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the College to the annual Founders’ Day Convocation, in the John L. Hill Chapel. This annual event celebrates Georgetown College's history and offers a chance to reflect on its mission.
CURRY AWARD FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE
Each Founders’ Day, Georgetown announces the Curry Award for Faculty Excellence. Named in honor of Dr. Ralph Curry and Dr. Gwen Curry ‘54, the Award is given each year to a faculty member who demonstrates service to faculty, excellence in scholarship, and dedication to students.
This year’s recipient is Dr. Carrie Cook.
Cook received her B.A. from Kentucky State University, her M.A. from Eastern Kentucky University, and her Ph.D. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She serves as Professor of English, director of the campus Writing Center, helps lead the Adult Online Education Program, and is a member of the College’s General Education Taskforce.
When describing Cook, Provost Dr. Jonathan Sands-Wise said, “Carrie is always willing to jump in for any task – if it will help the College or her students or colleagues, she is there. Willingly, with a smile, and with dedication, energy, graciousness, and skill. She does as much as anyone on campus in the hours she teaches and the administrative burden she carries (and that’s saying something for this faculty), AND as one alum noted, she does it all with a 'smile and a laugh that cannot help but be infectious.’”
SGA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL INDUCTION
Dr. Bryan Langlands, Assistant Vice President for Student Life, and Campus Minister, introduced the newly elected Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Council.
Student inducted include:
- President Savannah Fields ’28 from Georgetown, Kentucky
- Vice President Branden Kalla ’28 from Frankfort, Kentucky
- Vice President of Academic Affairs Alyssa Cox ’29 from Estill County, Kentucky
- Vice President of Community Affairs Lawson Zaring ’28 from Shelbyville, Kentucky
- Parliamentarian George Younger ’28 from Frankfort, Kentucky
Fields remarked, “To me, SGA is about listening, supporting your peers, and advocating for positive change. Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice or smartest person in the room, it’s about showing up, listening with intention, and leading your community with care and respect.”
KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANDI JOHNSON
Headlining this year’s Founders’ Day event was recent Georgetown College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Andi Johnson ‘03. Johnson currently serves as the Chief Policy Officer and Director of Regional Engagement for Commerce Lexington, Inc. and was also a member of the College’s 2003 championship basketball team.
For those unfamiliar with the 2002-03 women’s basketball team, it was a squad “defined by resilience in the face of adversity. By the time January arrived, and conference play began, we had five healthy players and one manager dressing in uniform,” remarked Johnson. Despite the odds, the Tigers went on to a 22-12 record, capturing the Mid-South Conference regular-season title, winning the conference tournament, and earning a berth in the NAIA National Tournament.
In her address, Johnson spoke about the effect of overcoming a season with such adversity; it led to an understanding of resiliency and community, and solidified a belief that we are all “better together”. She highlighted each member of the team and their individual strengths, noting: “the blending of unique strengths along with a shared grit made us a good team. We accepted changing circumstances and adjusted our roles. We worked hard and stayed committed to the goal. We did the little things right and those little things became big things in close games. We also trusted each other, a trust grounded in mutual respect. And finally, we were resilient because we didn’t walk the road alone, we were supported by coaches, family members, friends, the campus, and so many special people connected to Georgetown College. It all mattered.”
