Small Changes Make a Big Difference in Jacobs Gallery

Submitted on June 11, 2019

The Jacobs Gallery, one of the most beautiful spaces on campus, is getting a facelift for the upcoming fall semester. New flooring in the center of the room adds a more unified feel to the entire space and helps the astounding artwork on display stand out even more.

The gallery, which houses a permanent collection of artwork, is on the first floor of the Ensor Learning Resource Center. The collection largely consists of artwork gifted to the college by Dr. Donald and Dorothy Jacobs, with an emphasis on 20th Century American art.

Along with new flooring, slight tweaks have given the gallery a more open layout. This not only makes the gallery a more beautiful room, but it allows it to serve as a presentation space, something Director of Art Galleries and Curator of Collections, Samantha Simpson, is excited about. “We’re excited about the potential for this to be a bigger presentation space moving forward. It’s such a beautiful room, and making it more user-friendly will just draw more eyes to the amazing work housed here.”

Another in-progress change to the gallery is the rearranging of the front lounge of the gallery. The lounge area will include seating, as well as a mounted television showing curated video work.

A grand reopening of the Jacobs Gallery is tentatively scheduled for early Fall of 2019.
