Named Awards given at Academic Honors Day

Maria Leonard Senior Book Award is awarded to a senior member of Alpha Lambda Delta who has maintained the highest grade point average of their class. A book is presented to the Ensor Learning Resource Center in honor of the recipient.

Ronald E. Meredith Leadership Scholarship was established in 1994 by friends and colleagues of Judge Ronald E. Meredith, a 1967 alumnus of Georgetown College. It recognizes upper-class students who, in addition to good academic performance, have demonstrated leadership potential and may be pursuing leadership development.

Brandon D. Lawson Scholarship is awarded to a business major from a diverse background and good character who submits an essay from a given prompt. 

The Fogle Cultural Travel Scholarship is awarded to full-time upper-class students with a 3.0 GPA who demonstrate that travel will enhance their studies. It was established in 1997 by Dr. David P. Fogle of Annapolis, Maryland, and Mr. Raymond O. Sommers of Louisville, Ky., in honor David E. and Alice P. Fogle. Dr. David E. Fogle, an 1895 alumnus and teacher, established the Modern Languages program at Georgetown College.

Edith Monson Foreign Travel Award is awarded to any student with a major or minor in a world language with a 2.5 or higher GPA (3.0 GPA in target language courses).  Edith Long Monson (1904-1990), a native of Cynthiana, Ky. devoted nearly 30 year to teaching French at her alma mater, Georgetown College, where she received her B.A. in French in 1927.  She went on to receive her M.A. in French from the University of Michigan in 1931, and did graduate work at Middlebury French School and the Sorbonne in Paris, France.  The College awarded her the Alumni Achievement Award in 1970, and an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1978.

KIIS Travel Scholarship The Kentucky Institute for International Studies is a consortium of colleges and universities with study abroad programs in over a dozen countries around the world.  Each year, KIIS presents a travel scholarship in each of these programs to students of exceptional promise and demonstrated need

Adelia “Dee Dee” McMakin Owens Art Scholarship is awarded to a rising junior with a declared major or minor in art with at least a 2.5 GPA. After graduating in 1961, Owens received her degree from the American College of Arts in Atlanta, Georgia.  She combined her love for art with a business focus and owned and operated Adelia’s, an interior design firm in Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Jim McCormick and Robert Williams Art Scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore with a declared major or minor in art.  The scholarship is renewable through the student’s senior year as long as the student maintains a grade point average of at least 3.0 with a 3.5 in art and successfully completes two art courses per semester.

W. Vinson and Garnett Pierce Art Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in any art major or minor. This award was established in 1991 by Dr. and Mrs. W. Vinson Pierce, 1925 and 1926 graduates of Georgetown College.

Coleman Arnold Award is awarded to students in upper division English classes in recognition of excellence in research and is named in honor of former English department chair, Dr. Coleman Arnold.

Gwen Cranfill Curry Scholarship is awarded to a student who best exemplifies the qualities that Dr. Curry promoted: creativity, service, scholarship, hard work, and pursuit of excellence. 

W.B. Jones Awards are awarded in memory of former department chair, W.B. Jones, to recognize excellence in creative writing.

Mary Lee Thornton Brady Scholarship is in honor of Dr. Mary Brady who taught English classes at every level of the curriculum, advised students, and served the College in a wide range of capacities. The purpose is to provide students the opportunity to excel in their passion for English and reduce financial burden.

Curry/Marchman Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in a degree-granting program other than music, who is an active participant in one of the college's instrumental music ensembles, and has also, exhibited a desire for a lifelong association with instrumental music.  Established in memory of alumni Alva Curry Marchman, 1934, her father, Lathey E. Curry 1917; and her husband, James F. Marchman, Jr. 1933, by her sons.  Alva Curry Marchman earned a degree in music with a minor in math and continued to pursue her love of music in various symphonic groups and choirs throughout her life.  She was also very active in the Maskrafters performing group.

Catherine Cress Martin Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students at Georgetown College, with preference given to music students who are in good standing.  A graduate of Oneida Baptist Institute, Union College, and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Mrs. Martin also attended High Point College and Georgetown College.  She began her thirty-five-year teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Clay County, Kentucky.  Two of Mrs. Martin’s children and three of her grandchildren are graduates of Georgetown College.

Horace T. Hambrick Writing Award honors Dr. Horace T. Hambrick who taught in the history department from 1949 to 1996.  Each year, the history department presents the writing award established in his honor to the student who, in the judgment of the history faculty, competed the most outstanding senior research paper in the Senior Seminar.

Carl Fields Phi Alpha Theta Award is given in honor of Dr. Carl Fields who taught in the history department from 1935 to 1977.  Phi Alpha Theta is the honor society for history.  Each year, the history department presents the Phi Alpha Theta Award to the history major and member of the honor society who, in the judgment of the history faculty, best exemplifies the high ideals and academic standards of the society.

James Heizer Award in European/Asian History honors Dr. James Heizer, a long-time member of the history faculty at Georgetown College who remains a generous and devoted friend of the department.  Each year, the history department presents the award established in his honor to the student who, in the judgment of the history faculty, made the most outstanding contribution to a European or Asian history class or classes.

Mary Wharton American History Award honors Mary Wharton, a biology professor at Georgetown College with an avid interest in history. Each year, the history department presents the award established in her honor to the student who, in the judgment of the history faculty, made the most outstanding contribution to an American history class.

Ruth and Jim Heizer Book Award is a cash award given to a rising senior majoring in philosophy who has demonstrated exceptional promise and achievement. It is given in honor of long-time philosophy professor Ruth Heizer, and her husband Jim Heizer, professor in the history department both continuing friends and supporters of philosophy study at Georgetown.

Ernest J. and Kathryn Weller Award is awarded to the outstanding junior in religion.  Established by Miss Grace Weller, class of 1936, and named for her parents Ernest J. and Kathryn Weller.

Adda F. Layton Hilke and Ruth Hilke Scholarship is awarded to full-time students who intend to graduate from Georgetown College with preference given to those majoring or minoring in music or religion. Established in 1986 by James Hilke, husband and brother respectively to the women for whom the scholarship is named.  Adda, class of 1947 and active in Chapel Choir and Oratorio Chorus and Ruth, who tragically died in an automobile accident her junior year at Georgetown College, remembered for her Christian philosophy and loving personality, was active in the Baptist Student Union.

Henry and Shirley Walters Award is given each year to a senior who will be attending seminary or divinity school with the intention of entering the ministry.  The award was established in memory of Reverend Henry Clay Walters and his wife Shirley Jean Walters by his children Patti (Dan) Miller and Cindy (Roger) Buchanan.

Ora Lunceford Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a full-time female student.  The scholarship was established in memory of Ora McLeod Lunceford by her husband Dr. Joe Lunceford and her sons, William and Kenny.  Ora was an employee of Georgetown College for many years in the library and mail room and a true Tiger fan, attending countless athletic events with her husband.

Gardner-Marshall Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to qualified students so that they can experience mission and study abroad opportunities while pursuing training for ministry and service at the College in a manner consistent with the purpose of the Marshall Center for Christian Ministry. 

Robert T. Hinton Scholarship is awarded to a rising senior majoring in biology who has achieved a high scholastic standing and acceptable campus citizenship.  Robert Hinton (1878-1948), class of 1899, was a professor of biology, director of athletics and academic dean at Georgetown College.

Linda and Jay Butler Biology Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in Biology who maintains a 3.0 GPA and is in good academic standing.

C.R. Alexander Award in Organic Chemistry is in honor of C. R. Alexander who was a Kentucky native born in 1901 and a professor of Chemistry at Georgetown College from 1946-1971.  His area of specialty was Organic Chemistry.  Dr. Alexander also served as Dean of Men from 1954-1958.

John Blackburn Award in Chemistry honors Dr. John Blackburn, who came to Georgetown College in 1972 to chair and organize a two-person Chemistry department. His mastery of teaching and administration was exemplary and it enabled the department to grow from a two-person faculty to the current five professor department.  The department has been awarded American Chemical Society approval and is one of only three liberal arts colleges in Kentucky to earn this honor.  Dr. Blackburn retired in 2001 and currently serves on the Georgetown College Board of Trustees.  His leadership set the tone for excellence that continues to influence the department today.  This award is presented to a Chemistry major who exhibits this excellence in service and commitment to the department.

J. W. Rogers Scholarship is awarded each spring to a student majoring in mathematics and/or physics for use during the student’s junior or senior year.

Dr. Christine Leverenz Teaching of Mathematics Scholarship is in honor of Dr. Christine Leverenz, a long-time member of the Math, Physics, & Computer Science Department.  It is meant to provide students with the opportunity to excel in their passion for mathematics and reduce financial burden.

W. I. Lewis Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior pre-med student with a 3.0 GPA who exhibits acceptable campus citizenship, character, and a caring attitude for others.  Established by Mary Alice and Richard Deen, class of 1956, in memory of her father, a practicing physician and surgeon for 44 years.

Mary Louise Foust Accounting Award is awarded to either a junior or senior majoring in accounting with at least a 2.5 GPA.  Foust, a 1938 economics graduate of Georgetown College, earned a law degree at the University of Louisville.  She obtained a law license in 1943 and a CPA license in 1953 and was believed to be the first woman in Kentucky to obtain both professional licenses.  In 1963 she was the first woman to run for governor of Kentucky.  Elected as Kentucky’s Auditor of Public Accounts, she held this position for ten years.

John E. Drake Accounting Award is awarded to an accounting major with an overall 3.0 GPA and a 3.5 GPA in accounting who will be able to graduate the following year, who exhibits a Christian lifestyle and service to the college and other students.  Established in 1985 by his wife Darlene, Drake was a dedicated Christian who served Georgetown College as an assistant professor of accounting from 1961 to 1980 until he took early retirement due to poor health.  He was faithful to his church, and his love for his students was evidenced by the number of letters he received from them after he left Georgetown College.

Debbie McRoberts Scholarship in Elementary Education is awarded to a rising junior or senior elementary education major admitted to the teacher education program who is committed to teaching elementary education.  The scholarship was established in 1992 by Drs. Carolyn and Howard Thompson.  McRoberts, a magna cum laude graduate of 1983 was an elementary education major and a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Mu.  She was a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville at the time of her death.  She died in 1985 from injuries sustained in a car accident.  She is remembered as an outstanding student, a dedicated Christian, and an excellent teacher.

Janice and Happy Osborne, Sr. Education Award is awarded to a candidate in the initial certification education preparation program who reflects a commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive educator workforce.

Betty Yancey Griffith Scholarship was established by her husband, Dr. Bob Griffith, and son, Dr. Mark Griffith, in honor of their wife and mother.  The award is given to a student who is majoring in music with an emphasis in piano.

Carol Williams Award is given to a senior education major who has demonstrated, through the power of perseverance and an unwavering, personal pledge to continuous improvement of self and skill, to becoming a teacher leader who will lead future classrooms of P-12 students to success. This award is named in honor of longtime Department of Education faculty member Mrs. Carol Williams. 

Roger Alan Bailey Memorial Scholarship is awarded to either a junior or senior communication arts majors with an emphasis in the area of public address who maintains at least a 3.0. If no communication and media studies majors qualify the scholarship may

be awarded to a political science major.  Established in 1976 by Robert C. and Thelma L. Bailey in memory of their son, a 1967 graduate of Georgetown College. Roger majored in speech and was actively involved in debating, an area in which he received a number of awards.  After earning a master’s degree and teaching at Southern Mississippi University, he entered the Air Force and was assigned as an ROTC instructor.

Alma J. Hall, a former Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies, believes deeply in the life-changing experience of study abroad. She has donated these funds to aid Communication and Media Study students in their ability to pursue experiences abroad.

Susan H. Bell Research Award recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement in psychological research by undergraduate students. It honors individuals who demonstrate strong methodological skills, critical thinking, and a commitment to advancing knowledge in the field through research projects

Erica Hagan Service Award is given in honor of Erica Hagan, 2014 Georgetown College alumnae whose life ended far too soon.  In one of her papers she wrote “A call has always been placed on my heart to travel and help those in need" The recipient of this award is a psychology major who has made substantial contributions to various communities through volunteer work

Mark Eddy Psychology Award is awarded to a graduating psychology major who has overcome an obstacle within the context of faith. Dr. Eddy joined the Psychology Department in 2002 but soon afterward he was diagnosed with lung cancer. His battle with cancer ended in 2007. Dr. Eddy had an incredibly strong faith and optimistic attitude toward his own life circumstances and toward all people. He embodied characteristics that we hope others in our field of psychology possess. This award is awarded to a graduating senior who best exemplifies Dr. Eddy's spirit.

Carlton/Deason Scholarship honors J. Richard Carlton and Mary E. Carlton and the memory of Owen W. and Betty Jean Deason.  The award is presented to a rising junior or senior who is majoring in History and/or Sociology and is based on student academic performance, promise, character, and need.

Georgetown College Academic Honors Program encourages the intellectual growth of the College community by giving highly motivated students the opportunity to pursue challenging and stimulating coursework. Students who graduate from the program complete Honors elements in seven courses and a senior thesis.

Dean’s Honor Award is a recognition given to two graduating seniors.  These two students, nominated by faculty and selected by the Provost, demonstrate the highest levels of achievement in their academic endeavors and a clear commitment to scholarship.
