Academic Honors Day Celebrates Student Achievements

Dean's Honor Awards at GCGeorgetown College Academic Honors DayAcademic Honors Day was celebrated in the John L. Hill Chapel at Georgetown College last week to honor the outstanding achievements of our students. Faculty presented departmental awards and scholarships. This year, the ceremony also featured the inaugural presentation of two new scholarships including the Brandon D. Lawson Scholarship and the Linda and Jay Butler Biology Award.

“This is truly one of my favorite days of the year,” says Provost Dr. Jonathan Sands Wise. “The students honored today have shown true grit and determination in their academic pursuits at Georgetown College. I am so proud of their accomplishments.”

The Brandon D. Lawson Scholarship was established to recognize a business major who displays good character and submits a written essay. The first scholarship award was presented to junior Quentin Barclay who is majoring in finance. Barclay is a football player, a member of the Black Student Union, president of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and a campus photographer. Brandon D. Lawson ’13 is the first African-American male alum to establish a scholarship at Georgetown College. Lawson attended the ceremony to present the award in person with Vice President for Athletics Brian Evans.

The Linda and Jay Butler Biology Award was established for a student majoring in biology who is also maintaining a 3.0 GPA and remains in good academic standing. The award was presented to junior Morgan Rice who is majoring in biomedical sciences and minoring in psychology. Rice is also a member of Health Scholars.

The Dean’s Honor Award is the top academic recognition for seniors, and this presentation was awarded last. Provost Dr. Jonathan Sands Wise presented the awards to seniors Olivia Spain and Paul Stevens.

Stevens is majoring in ACS-certified chemistry with a minor in physics. He completed his honors research at the University of Texas studying the synthesis of Formicamycin H. Stevens will attend the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill next year to study synthetic organic chemistry.

Spain is a history major with minors in chemistry, biology, and classics. She plans to continue her education and study osteopathic medicine. Spain was a member of Oxford Scholars, Christian Scholars, Science Honors, and Health Honors during her time at Georgetown College.
