ON WE GO! – November 8, 2017

Yesterday I broke away from the office a little before 11:00 a.m. to attend a reading presentation by Kentucky poet laureate Frederick Smock. Dr. Smock is a Professor of English at Bellarmine University, and he is a Georgetown alumnus from 1976, with a major in English and a minor in Spanish. Not only is he a widely published poet and an experienced editor, but he is also an interesting and engaging teacher.
The hour with our students and Dr. Smock in the Ward Room was just wonderful as he set forth contexts, then read from his poetry. He reminded us how poetry is an exercise of inspiration and creativity, and that its meanings and effects are intensely personal both to its writers and to its readers. So, today, if it is not a part of your normal practice, I encourage to select an author and read a poem. Today is a good day to stretch your mind with the joy of poetry.
