Occurring on our campus during the next two days is an important conference sponsored by the Georgetown College Center for Christian Discernment. Professor Roger Ward has led in shaping a conference around the theme ‘For the Beauty of the Earth,’ and gathered keynote presenters in the persons of Dr. Norman Wirzba, Professor of Theology and Ecology at the Duke Divinity School, and Ms. Mary Berry, Executive Director of the Berry Center in Newcastle, Kentucky. I would encourage everyone to plug on the Georgetown College website for details, then come enjoy any and all portions of what promises to be a stimulating conference.
We might add to your thinking a couple of observations derived from the New Testament Gospels. Jesus’ ministry was largely conducted in rural areas with small populations, and with his travels, he consistently avoided sizable urban areas, in favor of the countryside. Further, mountains, seas, fields, plants, and animals were repeatedly the focus of his teachings. It seems to me that to live in a manner consistent with the life and teachings of Jesus means not only to accept the challenge of his words, but also to embrace his care for nature.
