Tigers Blank Royals in Season Opener

Submitted on August 27, 2018

Tigers’ defense and offense both put up quality performances against Warner University on opening day. Georgetown College (1-0) handed the ball off to Kyree Hawkins early in the second quarter for a one-yard score and never looked back as they dominated the Royals (0-1) 49-0.

It was a slow start for both teams in the first quarter as they both put up zero points with not a lot of offense to show. However, the No. 7 Tigers sparked as they put up 21 points in the second quarter. It started off when Hayden Shelton handed the ball off to Hawkins for the first score. The Tigers closed off the half when Nick Conley ran for a 24-yard score to put Georgetown up 21-0.

The Tigers put up two more scores in the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach where GC would end up closing out a successful opening day.

On offense, the Tigers were led by Conley who rushed for 84 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown and quarterback Hunter Krause threw for 149 yards on nine completions and two touchdowns.

On defense, the Tigers dominated only allowing 83 yards of total offense. Ryan Woolf had a big day with eight tackles – four solo, four assisted. GC also created four turnovers – three interceptions (Jon Beets, Germell Jenkins, Christion Horton) and one forced fumble (Dylan Brock).

"It was fun for the guys. We're excited. From the start of the game to the end of the game," said GC coach Bill Cronin. "We had some screw-ups here and there, but we were flying around on defense and made some big plays on special teams.

"We showed some discipline on both sides of the ball today. We had some different guys coming in and being highlighted. Defensively, there was a little bit of intensity out there. I like where we are."

Georgetown enters its bye week but returns in two weeks for a road trip to No. 2 Reinhardt University.

"These next two weeks are really important," Cronin said.
