Honor for Excellence in Online Teaching
Submitted on January 5, 2018
Alumna Jennifer Daugherty Fairchild, Ph.D., Georgetown College Class of 1997, is recipient of the 3rd annual Eastern Kentucky University eCampus Awards Program (eCAPS) recognition for Excellence in Online Teaching – Undergraduate Category. The award honors Dr. Fairchild’s dedication and commitment to the EKU online program and to its students.
Fairchild is associate professor of Communication at EKU. She has taught there since 2007. This is the second year she has been nominated for the award.
Dr. Fairchild was quick to credit her undergraduate professors at Georgetown College with instilling the devotedness for which she received the nomination.
“My years as an undergraduate, and the excellent teachers I had at Georgetown inspire my teaching daily,” commented Fairchild via email in reacting to the recognition.
“I think of the grace, wit, and intelligence of the strong female role models I was lucky enough to have as teachers there, such as Alma Hall (Communication and Media Studies), Rosemary Allen (English), Barbara Burch (English), and Margaret Greynolds (Professor Emeritus, Communication Arts).
“These women lived their passion for their discipline and their students in the classroom. They cared about me as a student and fostered my love of learning. The caring and compassion of a teacher is something that cannot be quantified, but only hopefully emulated. I try to emulate my ‘Sheroes’ in the classroom every day.”
In nominating Dr. Fairchild, one student wrote, “Dr. Fairchild made the class exciting. I was terrified of public speaking but by her consistently positive feedback and use of motivational clips, I actually felt empowered to speak in public.
“She was the most actively engaged online professor I have ever had. She gave assignments that were well designed to help us, as students, open up dialogue and start to communicate with one another.
“As a result of her guidance, I feel more confident in my abilities as a speaker, a professional, and as a wife and mother. This class is the best class I have ever taken.”
The eCAPS awards founded just over a decade ago by the EKU Office of e-Campus learning, recognize excellence in student support, teaching, and course design.
