Georgetown College Celebrates Winter Commencement

Submitted on December 13, 2019

Georgetown College held its annual Winter Commencement ceremony on the evening of Friday, December 13th in John L. Hill Chapel. The graduating class, which includes those who have completed their degree or endorsement program this past summer and fall, consists of 94 graduate and undergraduate students, who will now become proud alumni of Georgetown College.

The ceremony marked President Will Jones’s first commencement as the 25th president of Georgetown College. In his remarks, President Jones urged those in attendance to share in the joy of this momentous occasion and honored not only the amazingly talented graduates, but their families and friends who helped them reach this milestone.

The Commencement Address was delivered by Mr. Keith Griesser ‘97, Principal of Paris Elementary. Mr. Griesser graduated from Georgetown College in 1997 with a degree in Music Education and then achieved his Master’s Degree from Georgetown in 1998. He lives in Georgetown with his wife, Amy Griesser ’94, and this year marks his 17th year in public education.

In his address, Mr. Griesser shared his fond memories of his time at Georgetown College, reminiscing about the family atmosphere he found at the college which helped shape who he is today and how he approaches his role as an educator. He also honored those who helped graduates get to this important point in their lives, urging the graduates to send a text to that person who pushed them and encouraged them when they were struggling.

Along with the conferral of degrees, the Graduate Dean’s Honor Award was presented by Dr. Candis Haskel. The award was established in 2007 to recognize outstanding students in the graduate education department. It recognizes a student who shows leadership and the vision to make a significant impact in the field of education. This year’s Graduate Dean’s Honor Award went to Austin Payne Gerughty.

Congratulations to the graduates, their families, and their friends.
