Christian Service Award Winners Announced

Submitted on July 31, 2020

Each year the Marshall Center for Christian Ministry recognizes members of Georgetown’s campus community who show a profound dedication to Christ and serve others in His name. The Marshall Center and Georgetown College are proud to announce this year’s winners of the Christian Service Awards.

The George Walker Redding Christian Service Award for Faculty, named in honor of beloved Professor of Religion, Dr. Redding, honors a faculty member who dedicates himself or herself to service in teaching. This year’s winner is Professor of Biology, Dr. Tracy Livingston. Dr. Livingston routinely teaches Sunday School at Centenary United Methodist Church and serves the homeless population, working with the organization, Room in the Inn.

A fellow faculty member said, “Dr. Livingston serves her students as a professor but also a mentor. She is always available to her students in class or in office hours, not only to answer questions about class, but to think with them about how to be a faithful Christian scientist as well.”

The Kenneth Claiborne Fendley Christian Service Award for Staff honors a staff member who exemplifies Christian Service. The award is named after Kenneth Fendley, who served as Public Relations Director at the college from 1955-1971 and again from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. This year’s award winner is Title IX Coordinator, Tiera Mason. She goes above and beyond for students at GC, giving of her time and energy to ensure students are taken care of.

She has worked with Christian Scholars on campus and led a mission trip this past year to Camden, New Jersey. She also is a key member of campus through her role in Diversity and Inclusion. “I am very impressed with this individual’s Christian commitment and capacity to love our students,” said a fellow coworker. “I can honestly say that she cares deeply about her faith and desires to see our students develop in their Christian faith.”

Finally, each year the Marshall Center awards the Norman and Martha Yocum Lytle Christian Service Award for a Graduating Senior to a recent GC graduate who serves their fellow student body in a profound way. This year’s winner is Matthew Longstreet. A member of the men’s soccer team at GC, Matthew serves Christ in the way he competes on the field, the way he treats others on campus, and in the way he gives of himself in his community.

He has started many organizations across campus and been heavily involved in others, devoted to helping spread Christ across campus.
