State Issued ID Card
While it is not required, many students choose to get a state issued identification card. This card serves as your official proof of identification anywhere in the United States. The Georgetown College Office of International programs recommends that students that do not wish to have a Kentucky driver’s license get a state issued identification card. You do not need both a state issued I.D. card and a Kentucky driver’s license.
Kentucky Driver's License
All non U.S. citizens may drive in the U.S. on their valid foreign license and International Permit for up to one year from the date of admission into the U.S. provided their home country is part of the Geneva Compact. Drivers from non Geneva Compact countries must obtain a Kentucky license within 30 days of establishing residency in Kentucky.
If you do not have a driver’s license in your home country, it generally takes a minimum of 180 days to get your driver’s license in Kentucky. It is recommended that you get your driver’s license in your home country before coming to the United States if possible.
If you already have a driver’s license in your home country, you will be required to take both the written and road tests in order to be licensed in Kentucky; however, the typical waiting period of 180 days will NOT apply to you.
